WHAM CARDS FOR SENIORS

Goodyear

My friend Budd Gilbert, a WHAM member and veteran, has been fighting cancer for awhile now and he wrote to me saying he had been so depressed a few weeks ago just sitting home waiting for his wife to get home each day. He told me that just when he was feeling the lowest he received a whole bunch of cards in the mail saying how much he mattered. He said that gave him courage and a reason to go on.

So I was serious about getting cards and crafts to the shut-ins and Connie from WHAM took me serious. She started a campaign to create and then deliver to the elderly in shut-in, no visitors situations. Next we will be asking the parents of the children who are not going to school right now to have their children make cards to give to the seniors. We also will be asking an organization in Mesa for they to do the same. We are asking for donations for supplies but mostly for your time and effort to make the cards. You can drop off your cards at WHAM, WHAM is Closed right now, but there is a box on the back patio that says Seniors Cards, please deposit there. A couple of truths involved here: Focusing on serving others is absolutely the best therapy to take the focus off our problems.” Wrote Budd Gilbert on FB 3/17/2020.

Because of his inspiring story I felt like we all need to do something during these times of Coronavirus that would bring us together and feel like we were doing something. I started a CARDS FOR SENIORS campaign on March 17, 2020 where only (6 – 8 people at a time gather) at WHAM to make uplifting cards to be delivered to senior residents in our communities. Even though WHAM’s doors are closed to the public you can drop off your cards at WHAM’s back Patio in a Box that says “CARDS FOR SENIORS”. We plan to deliver to the senior residents in a bundle that says these cards have been isolated for 48 hours, therefore, if infected the virus dies on paper and cardboard in 24hrs. These cards will be disinfected and placed in bags. Or you can put cards in an envelope or box and mail to WHAM at 16560 N. Dysart Rd., Surprise, AZ 85378.

To date WHAM, along with residents, have made and delivered 3800 cards to Surprise and Peoria senior facilities, uplifting many senior’s spirits. WHAM would like to expand this campaign into the Goodyear/ Avondale / and Buckeye areas. We are asking for people to help us make cards to deliver to those who cannot see their loved ones.

This is a perfect thing to get your kids that are out of school doing. They will understand how important it is to give to their communities, care about others around them, and have fun doing something constructive. Please help and make someone’s day a little brighter.

Please contact Linda or Connie if you want to be involved. If you want to know how to make these cards:

Mary Witkowski at marywitk@gmail.com

Linda Stahl at Linda.Stahl@wham-art.org

Connie at  Connie.whitlock@wham-art.org

PLEASE KNOW THAT WHAM WILL NOT PLACE ANYONE IN DANGER BY GIVING THESE CARDS TO SENIORS

WE WILL MAKE SURE THE INFORMATION IS DISTRIBUTED IN A SAFE WAY. We will follow the guidelines put out by the CDC.

*** *** Interested in other Opportunities for Shows, Classes, Art Societies and More? *** ***

Check out the information on the Club website's Home Page, left side buttons - "Things to Do & Review" feature.  (Be sure to log-in first!)  This feature is an important resource for Art Club members.

*** *** *** OPEN STUDIO *** *** ***

The Coyote Room is available for Open Studio work on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with morning times of 9:00am-11:30am and afternoon times of 12:30pm-3:00pm.  This is a wonderful opportunity for members to get together to work on their art piece, socialize (while observing social distancing!), and enjoy the camaraderie of other artists.

There are procedures in place to ensure, as much as possible, the safety of yourself and other artists:

1)  You must register the day and time you intend to use the Coyote Room.  You can do this by logging-in to the Club website; going to the calendar; selecting the date and time you want to attend Open Studio; clicking on that time and following through the steps to complete your registration.  If you have a problem, email Betty Jean Kennedy at blueoceangracie@yahoo.com and your name will be added to the list.  If you are unable to attend, please notify Betty Jean so that time slot can be available for another member.

2)  Enter the CAC through the front door, sign-in, and sanitize your hands.

3)  A limit of 10 people may be in the Coyote Room at one time.  There are specific places designated as work stations.  Please do not move the chairs around ... they have been positioned for social distancing.

4)  At the end of your session, use the wipes provided to sanitize your work space and any equipment you have used.

5)  Exit out the patio doors in the Coyote Room.

*** *** Opportunities for You to Volunteer *** ***

The Art Club is solely dependent upon Volunteers.

The PebbleCreek Art Club offers members many opportunities to show their artwork, attend social gatherings (at least before the pandemic!), attend classes, and more because someone has stepped up to serve as an officer, a committee member, or a chairperson.

The Art Club needs Volunteers for the coming year.  You are qualified.  You will bring to the Club fresh ideas and your unique vision.  You will not be alone.  You will have the support and the help of other Club members and Club officers.  Here are some opportunities:

Club officers:  The offices of President, VP-Operations, VP-Education Instructors, and VP-Education Classes will need to be filled for years 2021 and 2022.  Contact Marsha Lyons - marshalyons44@yahoo.com, Chairperson of the Nominating Committee, for more information or to offer your services in one of these offices.

Chairperson for the 2021 Spring Art Show and Committee members for the Spring Art Show:  The Art Club's Spring Show, normally held in March or April, needs a Chairperson and Committee members to schedule and plan the Spring Art Show.  If you volunteer to chair the Spring Show now, you can work with the Fall Show committee to learn more about what is involved.  Fresh ideas keep our Shows interesting to our community and challenging to our artists.

Instructors:  Are you interested in teaching a Zoom class or teaching an in-person class in the Coyote Room to a limited number of students?  If so, contact Diane Walenda at dwalenda8@gmail.com

Thank you for reading (or skimming!) through this lengthy Blast to these final comments!

The the Fall Show Committee, the Board and I have done our best to keep members updated about Club news, information, opportunities, and the availability of the Coyote Room at the Creative Arts Center during this pandemic.  At a time when there is so little going on, there is still a lot going on with the Art Club officers and the Fall Show Committee.

I hope you are keeping up with the information about the Fall Show, especially how to secure tickets to the in-person Show being held at FLITE November 7th (Saturday) and 8th (Sunday), 1:00pm to 5:00pm both days.  Check the Home Page of the Club's website for information about the tickets and more Fall Show news.

There is a wealth of information on the Club's website, so be sure to check it regularly.  You can reserve time at Open Studio in the Coyote Room.  Check the date of the next change-out of art in the Coyote Room window, see cancellations or new scheduling of classes.  Look for interesting links after clicking on the "Things To Do & Review" button.   And, more!  Be sure to log-in because much information is available to members only.

At the end of the Zoom meeting Friday, I asked members who had questions to email me and I would answer them in this Blast.  I did not receive any questions.  In the event some are sent to me later I will respond to the person individually.

Once again I want to thank members for their support and encouragement.  And, again, if you have questions, suggestions, or concerns, please email me at blueoceangracie@yahoo.com
